Widnes 3rds 17 - Ormskirk 3rds 46
27th October 2007

Ormskirk 3rds travelled to Widnes on the back of three straight league wins, and after a particularly strong performance against Wigan the previous week, were hopeful of another good win. The win they got, the performance on the other hand was less to shout about.

U14s Edge a Scrappy Game

Posted by: Mark B on Monday, October 29th, 2007

Ormskirk u14 29pts - Broughton Park u14 17pts

Ormskirk won this game without playing particualrly well, but still had too much for a spirited team from Broughton Park

Indeed the visitors came to Green Lane in confident mood with 5 wins and no defeats under their belt. This was the first time the two teams had ever played each other and the opening encounters were scrappy, but from broken play Eddie Webster did what he does best, scooped up the ball and crached through three tackles to score. This was added to by Gavin Griffiths who followed up a great run from George Lightfoot, to go over in the corner.

Presentation Evening

Posted by: Monty on Monday, October 29th, 2007

Thank you to everyone who helped make last Saturday’s Presenation Evening a huge success.

We had representation from all sections and teams within the Club. The marquee and the food seemed to go down really well, and Nick Jacobs and his band were great. All in all, a great atmosphere.

Feedback would be appreciated - it may well be that this format at the Club is preferable in future years?

Congratulations to all the award winners - The Advertiser will be informed of who won what!

Under 13s Claim Draw at Broughton Park.

Posted by: Pat on Monday, October 29th, 2007

Not so long after a tight victory against Broughton Park earlier in the season the Under 13s made the long drive to South Manchester to play them at their ground. As the match kicked off Ormskirk soon took early control with the forwards in excellent form controlling all phases of the game.

Crewe Cut Down At Green Lane

Posted by: Monty on Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Ormskirk 17-10 Crewe (Half time 17-0)

A first half of immense attacking rugby and a second of brutal defence saw Ormskirk win against a strong Crewe team at Green Lane on Saturday. On the day that hosted the annual club presentation awards the crowd was treated to a nail biting game that had a bit of everything.

Ormskirk were quick to assert themselves on the game as the forwards picked up where they had left off during the previous match, with strong, up-front rugby. Crewe historically have a huge pack but the Kirk forwards were up to the challenge and shocked the visitors with their raw power by scoring from a push over try that Captain and player of the year, Cliff Kirby was able to claim. Barry Whalley duly converted the points.

Under 13s go down fighting.

Another amended and late arranged fixture provided the under 13’s with the opportunity to trek across to Manchester to play Aldwinians. Due to the half term break and injuries, Ormskirk travelled without ten of what is now a sizeable squad.

Mini and Juniors Halloween Party

Posted by: Dudley on Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Friday saw a great night for all the families who took part in the Halloween Party at the Club.

The Disco/Karaoke went down a storm with many “entertainers” from both the Adults and the Kids taking part.

Special mention must be made about Lou Rees who with Phil Feeney should take part in the X factor, and also the Under 12’s (U11’s) led by the fearless Captain Monty in big group singing.

A big thanks to Lynne from Park Hall Restaurant for supplying what has to be the Best Hot Pot we have seen at the Club in many a year!

Thanks also to Clare, Shirley, Liz, Lou and all the young helpers who put together the Kids Buffet, and to Phil Sephton for supplying the Apples for the Dunking.

It was nice to see so many entering into the spirit of the evening and dressing up for the occasion, I haven’t ever seen so many witches in one place before…….and as for the Pumpkins….well the standard was so high that Stewart from the Disco found it difficult to find a winner. Anyway, congratulations to all those who won the Fancy dress and Pumpkin competitions!

Also a big thanks to all the contributors to the Raffle with a special big thank you to “First 4 Hair” in Liverpool for their generosity.

Winning Start To The Season for The Under 7s

Posted by: Allan Rees on Sunday, October 21st, 2007

ORUFC Under 7s v Tarleton - Home - 21.10.07

The under 7s made a great start to their 07/08 season when playing at home to Tarleton. We would like to say a huge thank you to Tarleton who agreed to a last minute fixture.

We lost half our squad at the end of last season to the new Under 8s and luckily have recruited 15 new players to join our exisiting squad over the last few weeks. The first match saw both sides working hard and giving their all, whilst observing the rules of tag rugby, however Ormskirk were too strong on the day.

Great Away Win For The Gingerbread Men

Posted by: Monty on Sunday, October 21st, 2007

First XV Match report – 20.10.07
Oswestry 13-25 Ormskirk (Half-time 3-13)

Ormskirk travelled to the English/Welsh border to play Oswestry for last weekend’s league fixture. The team arrived in good spirits and put on a fine display of running rugby and - more importantly - came home with a convincing win. Having been knocked out of the cup the previous week the onus was on the Green Laners to deliver. It started well with the forwards taking the ball and recycling effectively. Oswestry found it hard to stop the onslaught as player after player would break at the side of rucks. Man of the match Andy Wilson proved to be particularly troublesome on such darts and made valuable yards.

Ladies Tame The Lions

Posted by: Monty on Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Turning over last season’s third placed team in North 2 26 – 5 on their own patch should have been a cause for celebration for the newly promoted Ormskirk Ladies. But it wasn’t. Despite the comfortable margin the game finished with a sense of frustration and … well … defeat.

Under 13s Secure Impressive Away Win.

Posted by: Pat on Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Due to an amended fixture the under 13s found themselves travelling down the East Lancs on Sunday to play the usually well drilled and organised Leigh team. After two close games with Leigh last season, Ormskirk’s coaches were looking at this game as a guage to see how the team were progressing. Although a couple of players down from last week the side still travelled with 8 substitutes which left the coaches the difficulty of making changes, perhaps at crucial times, to ensure everyone got fair game time.

Ruskin Park 19-8 Ormskirk (Half time 14-3)

Two break away tries and a strong defence halted Ormskirk’s ambition of progress in the cup competition for this season. The fact that it was to local rivals, St Helen’s Ruskin Park, didn’t make the result any easier to swallow. However, a superb performance against a team a division higher, notably from the forwards, gave many positives for the first team squad to reflect upon.

Ladies Heroes, Zombies Zeroes

Blaydon 2nds             10

Ormskirk Ladies          33

Tries : A O’Malley, C Rylance (2), E Gander, L Robinson

Conversions : J Leitch (4)

Boarding a suitably re-inforced bus Ormskirk Ladies began their new season with a bladder threatening trip to Blaydon.  It would have been nice to go with a proven front row, but regular prop / hooker Lesley Kenny - who is as useful on stairs as a Dalek - pulled out after falling down yet another flight.  And without regular front row stalwart Jen Schofield it was left to Large, Little and Large (Liz Brown, Georgina Gillen and Sarah Hutt) to take on the tough Blaydon pack in the scrums.

Under 13s Win Tight Match.

Posted by: Pat on Sunday, October 7th, 2007

With Littleborough crying off from this week’s Lancashire Cup game it allowed a friendly fixture to be played against Broughton Park who were eager to wipe out the memory of their defeat to Ormskirk in last season’s Lancashire Cup semi-final. With Ormskirk having a large squad including several newcomers Broughton Park’s coaches graciously agreed to a match of 3 twenty minute periods obviously putting them at a disadvantage having only a couple of replacements of their own to call upon.
